Problem didn't exactly exist in Vanilla due to fewer raiders overall and a harsher enforcement of botters and gold sellers on Blizzard's end. Things are better in TBC for now because a huge amount of gold was taken out of the pool due to epic flyers and bags, as well as healthy ways to farm raw materials without requiring gathering skills. Third option was farming raw materials, but those were rather competitive and raiding guilds expected double raid professions, so people didn't always have the option of gathering skills unless you had an alt dedicated to them. You either needed to buy gold, or you needed to run GDKPs to get gold from gold buyers. The time it takes to farm the raw gold required for consumables simply became unreasonable towards Naxx. There were so few gold sinks in Classic (basically just the epic mount) so the issue became worse and worse. Rampant botting has made the cost of gold cheap and therefore the cost of items inflated. You need to buy things from other players. Gold buying became a necessity in Classic due to the overall availability of gold.
